As the creative lead for How Breast Cancer Is Like a Dandelion: Learn the Language of Breast Cancer and Find Your Confidence, I had the incredible opportunity to combine bespoke watercolor illustrations with engaging visual storytelling, creating a compassionate and accessible resource for all audiences. This project was deeply meaningful, as it aimed to ease the overwhelming and confusing experience that comes with a breast cancer diagnosis, offering support and clarity to patients and their loved ones.
The book, written by board-certified oncologist Dr. Joe Hofmeister and breast cancer expert Dr. Erin Macrae, provides a gentle introduction to the language of medicine, breaking down complex terms and concepts with simple analogies, calming visuals, and empathetic explanations. Each chapter offers definitions, pronunciations, and essential take-home points, along with empowering questions to ask doctors—giving readers the tools they need to confidently engage in their healthcare journey.
Through the use of soft, yet vibrant watercolor illustrations, I sought to create an inviting atmosphere that balanced the seriousness of the subject matter with hope and reassurance. The visual elements were crafted to reflect the warmth and comfort that the book provides, making it a valuable companion in navigating the emotional and medical complexities of breast cancer. Being part of this project was an inspiring and fulfilling experience, knowing that it would offer readers the confidence to move forward in their journey with knowledge, compassion, and clarity.
